The U-Sleep Pilot Program took place over a three-month period and consisted of 16 participants in Atlantic Canada and Ohio. Participants’ CPAP devices were configured to transmit usage data on a daily basis over a wireless or dial-up connection. Usage data was then evaluated against compliance standards (rules) such as daily usage time and Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) levels.  If the participant failed to meet their compliance standards, notifications were sent out by U-Sleep using text messaging, email and/or voice call to the participant as well as other individuals involved with the participant’s care, including their employer and respiratory therapist.  Finally, the compliance progress and notifications were charted within U-Sleep giving all stakeholders a secure, web-based view into therapy and compliance progress. Sleep Apnea: A Serious Issue Sleep apnea is a common, yet vastly undiagnosed sleep disorder. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea, which collapses or obstructs a person’s airway during sleep. It is believed that more than 20 million Americans and Canadians currently suffer from OSA and require some form of prescribed therapy to lead productive and healthy lives. Studies conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School show that a lack of sleep due to conditions such as OSA, can negatively affect an individual’s perception and judgment. U-Sleep Pilot Program Findings Pilot participants indicated that U-Sleep information was presented in a clear and concise manner that was easily understood and gave a complete summary of day-by-day compliance over time. This remark was consistent from users who managed multiple participants as well as individual participants who had access to only their own usage and compliance data. The findings also concluded that most participants maintained or increased their compliance with CPAP therapy during the pilot. Specifically, 76% of pilot participants increased their overall daily usage time, and 66% reduced their average AHI. During the pilot, 95% of participants remained compliant with their prescribed daily usage and expected AHI range. CPAP devices can offer incredible results. However, regular usage of the device must take place for patients to fully benefit from the therapy. “Umbian is extremely encouraged by the Pilot Program results.
